What is Engaged Learners?
Engaged Learners is an evidence-based behavior-support framework designed to be seamlessly integrated into small-group reading instruction for elementary-aged students. It helps children with reading and attention difficulties stay actively involved, focused, and on-task during lessons, while equipping teachers with research-based practical, low-intensity strategies that complement their existing instruction.
The framework does not require teachers to adopt a new curriculum or restructure their lessons. Instead, it layers onto what is already happening in the classroom, making engagement support part of everyday instruction rather than a separate intervention.

Why was it developed?
Students who struggle with reading often also struggle with attention and engagement during instruction. These challenges compound each other and general classroom management strategies or “tips” are not always sufficient for the focused, teacher-led structure of small-group reading time.
Engaged Learners was developed to fill that gap: built for the small-group reading context, grounded in research, and practical enough for teachers to implement without extensive professional development or coaching.
What's inside the program?
Engaged Learners is built on six research-based components, each with a strong evidence base in school settings. Together they create a structured, positive, and consistent environment that supports behavioral engagement during reading instruction.
Self-Regulation
At the end of every lesson, students evaluate their own performance and set a goal for next time.
Develops the self-monitoring and goal-setting skills that are foundational to becoming an independent, active learner.
Token Economy
Students earn points for meeting expectations and exchange them for a reward. The system fades over time as engagement becomes more consistent.
Provides the structure students need early on, while gradually creating a bridge towards intrinsic motivation and independence.

Behavior-Specific Praise
Immediate, targeted praise that names exactly what a student did well.
Strengthens positive behaviors and builds the confidence students need to stay engaged in challenging work.

Opportunities to Respond
A planned opportunity for a student or group of students to actively engage in the instruction
Keeps every learner actively participating, reducing mind wandering and distractions that pulls struggling readers off-task.

Group expectations are co-created with students on day one and referenced throughout every lesson.
Students who help set the expectations are more invested in meeting them.

Who is it for?
Engaged Learners is designed for use by educators delivering small group reading instruction working with elementary-aged students, particularly those serving students who present with reading difficulties, attention challenges, or both.
The framework can be adopted at the classroom level or implemented as part of a broader school or district support model. It is compatible with a range of reading curricula and does not require a specific program to be in place.
